Poetry Terms

Sound Devices

  1. Rhyme: Using the same vowel and consonant sound at the end of two words.
  2. Repetition: Using the same word or phrase more than once
  3. Alliteration: Using the same consonant at the beginning of words
Devices:
  1. Symbol:Is an object, person or idea that stands for something beyond itself
  2. Imagery:Words and parses that appeal to your senses
  3. Fugitive Language-Metaphor: Is a description of one item as if it were another, without using "like" or "as".   
  4. Simile: Is a comparison of two apparently unlike items that uses "like" or "as"
  5. Personification: Is a description of something non-human as if it were human 
Forms & Purpose
  1. Narrative- Tells a story
  2. Ballad(narrative)-Is a story similar to folktale or legend and often has a repeated refrain 
  3. Lyric Poem-Its a type of emotional songlike poetry, distinguished from dramatic and narrative poem
